Thacker Mountain Radio Hour returns Thursday

Published

on

Magnolia residents Caleb Pace (left), Mason Lankford, Barrett Lankford and Lincoln Lankford make up Folk Family Revival, who will be playing this year’s South by Southwest festival.

After a summer of out-of-town dates, The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour opens its fall season at its Oxford home, Off Square Books, on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Off Square Books is located at 129 Courthouse Square.

Guests will include New Orleans author Sarah M. Broom (The Yellow House), Oxford singer-songwriter Charlie Mars (The Money) and Americana rockers, Folk Family Revival (Electric Darlin’). Hosts of the show are Jim Dees and house band, the Yalobushwhackers.

The show will be broadcast live on-air and online Thursday by WUMS 92.1 FM locally and online at http://myrebelradio.com/. The show will be broadcast statewide on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (90.3 FM in Oxford).

Sarah M. Broom

Sara M. Broom’s unflinching memoir, The Yellow House (Grove Press), recounts her family’s dramatic relationship with their shotgun home, over years of upheaval – and hurricanes – in a neglected part of New Orleans.

Folk Family Revival are the Lankford family, Mason, Barrett and Lincoln, with their friend, lead guitarist Caleb Pace, all from Houston, Texas. Despite their name, the band produces a genre-busting sound that takes in rock, country, and blues. Charlie Mars has been a journeyman songwriting troubadour for 20 years, mostly based out of Oxford.

Thacker host Dees says the show is happy to be home.

“It’s important to travel around and visit listeners in various parts of the state,” he said. “But there’s nothing like the feeling of being on your home turf with familiar faces. Plus, we’ve got a great season in store.”

Highlights of the fall season (all shows are free admission) include two shows at the Lyric: Nationally acclaimed country singer Maggie Rose with young adult novelist Morgan Parker on Oct. 17; William Kent Krueger and his adventure novel, This Tender Land, about four children who escape their abusers on a daring canoe trip down the Minnesota River, with fiddle-powered grooves from Alice Hasen and the Blaze on Sept. 12.

Veteran Memphis guitarist Joe Restivo appears at Off Square Books on Sept. 19 with up-and-coming horror writer Shaun Hamill (Cosmology of Monsters).

Oxford favorite George McConnell is the musical guest on Sept. 26; folk-singer Claire Holley on Oct. 3; alt-Latino rockers Chocala for our Sarahfest show on Oct. 10 and a special civil rights commemorative show with New Orleans-native novelist Margaret Wilkerson Sexton (The Revisioners) with music by R&B veterans, the Scavengers on Nov. 10.

New Orleans soul-jazz powerhouse Lilli Lewis appears on Oct. 24.

Plus, there will be trick and treats for Halloween with 18-string Imrat guitarist Todd Mosby (must be seen – and heard- to be believed) on Oct. 31. The show will hold its annual Holiday-Membership party on Friday, Dec. 6.
