The Mississippi Highway Patrol reported two wrecks on Mississippi highways over the Labor Day weekend resulted in the deaths of three people.
Throughout the three-day holiday weekend, MHP issued 8,559 citations which included 216 DUI arrests, 520 seat belt citations and 121 child restraint citations. Troopers investigated 131 wrecks, which included 44 injuries and three fatalities on state highways.
In Troop E, which includes Lafayette County, troopers investigated 20 wrecks that included a fatal wreck in Marks.
At about 8:53 p.m. a 2003 Ford passenger car driven by Timothy Jackson, 20, was traveling south on MS 3. A tire failure caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and travel off the side of the road, colliding with an electric pole. A passenger, Shenika Wright, 32, was killed and pronounced dead at the scene. According to MHP, alcohol was a factor in the wreck.
The second fatal wreck occurred at about 5 p.m. Friday in Perry County where two people were killed on MS 15. A 2016 Kia driven by Erin Anderson, 16, of Lauren was traveling south when a GMC passenger vehicle, driven by Tommy Hinton, 65, crossed the center line and collided with Anderson’s vehicle. A passenger in the GMC, Thomas Hinton, 26, and Brenna Clark, 16, a passenger in the Kia, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Troop E troppers issued a total 1,197 citations and 35 DUIs.
No fatal wrecks occurred in Lafayette County, according to Coroner Rocky Kennedy.
