The opening of Oxford’s first public downtown parking garage is on track for later this month, according to city officials.
Oxford Parking Director Matt Davis said the garage could open by Sept. 24, which was the predicted opening date. Officials had hoped to have the garage completed before Ole Miss home football games; however, construction started a few weeks later than originally expected last summer.
“Obviously, the completion date may be affected by unforeseen issues including weather,” Davis said Thursday.
Construction on the garage started in September 2018; however, city officials and the Downtown Parking Advisory Committee have been working on the logistics and planning of the new garage for several years.
The garage is located on the Oxford Square North parking lot that is directly northwest of the Square between Jefferson and Monroe avenues. The total square footage of the garage is 141,800 square feet and has four levels that house 399 parking spaces.
Parking will be $1 an hour from 10 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Saturday on the first floor of the garage. Parking will be free on the second, third and fourth floors.
The garage will have elevators and stairs for patrons wishing to use the upper levels, and there will also be visitor restrooms that are accessible from the outside of the building. The lot surrounding the garage will consist of 86 regular spaces, four handicap spaces and two large charter bus spaces.
