The Lafayette Commodores open the 2019 regular season Friday, Aug. 23 on the road as they take on the Cleveland Central Wolves. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Lafayette looks to build on last season after going 9-4 overall and having a 5-2 mark in league play.
Last Friday night the Commodores took part in a jamboree against the South Panola Tigers to gear up for the regular season.
“Although the scoreboard did not turn out, (the coaches) got a lot of good film on our guys,” head coach Michael Fair said.
According to Fair, the team made good plays that made the coaches feel positive about the game’s outcome. Heading into the first week’s matchup, the Commodores have to limit mistakes, turnovers and be very disciplined on Friday against the Wolves.
Lafayette has three key seniors returning to the offensive line—Levi Lott, Austin Wilson and Dylan Christman—who will help protect senior quarterback Randy Anderson.
“Anderson has done a really great job for us,” Fair said.
Cleveland Central is coming off of a 3-9 record in 2018 and a 2-5 mark in district play. The Wolves scored a total of 155 points and allowed a total of 371 points.
“Cleveland Central is probably one of the most athletic teams that we will face this season,” Fair said. “It will be a good challenge for our football team and we are looking forward to it.”
