The start of high school football is right around the corner and teams are preparing for the grind of Friday night under the lights. The Oxford Chargers football team recently received a top 10 preseason ranking at No. 5 by the Southern Elite Sports Mississippi Network.
Last season, the Chargers finished with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-1 mark in district play. Oxford got wins over South Panola, Tupelo, Southaven, DeSoto Central and Lafayette.
Coming into the 2019 campaign Maxpreps.com has Oxford’s strength of schedule at 15.1. Looking ahead, the three toughest opponents in the regular season for the Chargers are Starkville, Horn Lake and their cross-town foe the Lafayette Commodores.
Oxford’s head football coach Chris Cutcliffe and his squad were perfect on the season away from home with a 5-0 mark.
“It’s a testament to what teams in the past at Oxford have done from the foundation that they have laid,” Cutcliffe said. “(We don’t put) a whole lot of stock into preseason rankings. If a team gets that they have to prove it on the field.”
The Chargers open the 2019 campaign at Bobby Holcomb field as they play host to the Northwest Rankin Cougars. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
