The Oxford High School football team was once again surprised after a morning of workouts on Wednesday with their annual Beacon Run.
Head Coach Chris Cutcliffe led the charge to the local restaurant where team members enjoyed breakfast before returning to the field house.
“The Beacon Run is no doubt everyone’s favorite day of summer training,” Cutcliffe said.
The football team was joined by OHS principal Noah Hamilton and assistant principals Nikki Logan and Johnnie Dudley.
Prior to the run, newly-hired principal, Hamilton, spoke to the football team for the first time. He spoke to them regarding his tenure as a basketball coach and said how each player has their role on a team and within the school system itself.
“That’s what I need you guys to do for me at the high school – find your role and fill it,” Hamilton said. “Your role is to be leaders.”
Followed by his inspirational speech, Hamilton gave the sign that the annual Beacon Run was to commence. He said, “the last thing I have to say is somebody needs to tell me something about a run.”
Within mere seconds, the football team charged out of the conference room in the field house and began the charge to The Beacon.
The team ran north along Bramlett Boulevard and was escorted by an Oxford Police Department patrol car as they made their route toward the restaurant.
As the football team crossed the threshold of the Beacon parking lot, they were met with applause and cheers from student resource officers from the school’s JROTC program and their coaches.
Cutcliffe told Hottytoddy.com that the football team has had an outstanding summer, especially under the guidance of the strength and conditioning coordinator Coach Jason Wilfawn.
“Our coaching staff has done a phenomenal job getting their position groups ready to go,” he said.
Cutcliffe said the football team is excited to continue training during fall camp, which is slated for Aug. 5.
The Oxford Charger football team will face off in a non-conference game to begin their year against Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.) on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at Bobby Holcomb field.
