Single mothers in the Oxford community have a chance to attend a free event, enjoy the fellowship of other single mothers and gain access to resources they made need as they raise their children. The event, hosted by fellow single mothers, works to connect mothers with resources throughout the community.
The topic of this years event is ‘Relentless.’
Director of the I Am Brave Foundation, Deanna Thompson, said she wants to let mothers know they have a support group. The Oxford-based organization works to provide resources for women, especially single mothers.
“We want to reach out to other mothers and let them know that they are not alone,” Thompson said.
Thompson and Shalonda Smith, of Oxford, began the nonprofit in 2017. The organization’s mission is to love, support, and encourage women in the community of Lafayette County, according to its website. Thompson and others work to connect women through Christian ministries, counselors, businesses and other organizations as well as vocational training programs and job placement organizations.
Thompson, a single mother herself, knows the difficulties and stress that come with raising children as a single parent.
“I recognize the need for practical things as well as support that will help mothers in their journey,” she said.
The event will be held July 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at Oasis Church of All Nations on Highway 6.
Church leaders donated their facility for the event, Thompson said.
Attendees will be able to hear from other single moms and be encouraged as the new school year approaches.
“I know that it can be hard raising children on your own. We want to encourage mothers to stay strong and help them not feel alone,” Thompson said.
