This year marks the 50th anniversary for Larson’s CashSaver and store owner Brent Larson looks to make it an important celebration for his customers with meat, cooler and other giveaways.
Brent’s father and his two uncles first opened Larson’s in March 1969 behind the Burger King on University Avenue. They moved the current location in the Eastgate Plaza Shopping Center in 1977.
“My Dad worked it for many many years, then when I graduated from Ole Miss in 1990 I came aboard just working on what he taught me – how to treat customers and every aspect of the store’s operations,” Larson said.
Eddie Mays, who works in the meat department, said that one of his favorite parts of his job is greeting the customers every day.
“I wouldn’t trade anything for this job. Every day I come in and every customer comes in happy and laughing and it’s the best feeling in the world,” he said.
It’s not just the employees who are happy that Larson’s has been open for so long, but the customers as well. One customer, Phyllis Frazier, explained why Larson’s is her go-to grocery store over Walmart and Kroger.
“I love supporting local businesses and with Larson’s always having what I need and being so easy to get in and out of it’s just my favorite store to shop at,” she said.
Larson explained that the store’s main focus is to meet the needs of customers, first and foremost. He says Larson’s provides shopping, quality and budgeting experiences they might not be able to find at other big-box stores.
“We just try to do what we do best, and that’s taking care of our customers. Whether that’s answering their questions, being here when they need assistance with anything. As for competing against the big stores, we’re happy where we’re at,” he said.
