This weekend MS Critterz, the group that runs the Animal Shelter in Oxford, will be lowering its adoption rates in hopes of finding forever homes for an abundance of cats and kittens.
The Kitten Palooza will run from Friday through Sunday with adoption rates for cats reduced to $20 for adult cats and $25 for kittens. Adoption fees include spay and neutering, micro-chipping and vaccinations. Those who fill out an adoption application will have a chance to win a prize.
On Saturday, enjoy family-friendly activities from 12 to 6 p.m. that will include face painting, balloon animals by Steven Thomas and coloring stations. Adults can enjoy Starbucks coffee while everyone can munch on Chick-fil-A cookies.
The shelter will open on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m only for adoptions. The shelter will not be accepting animals on Sunday.
According to Gail Brown, board president, this is the peak time of the year for puppies and kittens. There are currently about 99 cats and kittens in foster care with many more at the shelter.
In April, the shelter took in 63 cats and kittens from Oxford and in May they took in 224 cats and kittens.
Brown said the shelter is looking for more volunteers to foster and is trying to find a way to transport some of the cats to other shelters like they do with puppies and dogs. However; while many states up north have strict spay and neuter laws, which create a shortage of adoptable dogs, an abundance of cats and kittens is an issue in most states.
