Van Cooper opened Van Atkin’s doors in 2017 to serve the Oxford community with an affordable and diverse range of jewelry to celebrate commemorative moments in people’s lives. The original Van Atkins located in New Albany largely caters to bridals, where Cooper wanted to serve the entire Oxford community.
‘We always had a great and loyal following that would drive to our New Albany location,” Cooper said. “I knew Oxford had a lot of potential with out-of-state kids and their families coming to town as well too.”
Cooper and his wife are the owners and managers of the Van Atkins in Oxford, while Cooper’s father is still head of sales of Van Atkins in New Albany. Cooper worked under his father for seven years, until it was decided it was time for Cooper to take the reins.
“My father knew Van Atkins would stay in the family forever,” Cooper said. “Once we decided to open a store here, it was a given that I would come here and be the one to do it.”
“I am not going to lie, it has been a challenging experience, but it is so rewarding at the same time. I love the Oxford community and every new friend my wife and I have had the privilege of working with,” Cooper said.
The Oxford location serves a different purpose than the original store which focuses on bridal needs, However, Cooper knew the family wanted a jewelry store in Oxford that would cater to everyone. Van Atkins was opened to serve everyone and their jewelry needs. They will always be there to help brides, Cooper said, but he believes anyone can come in a find something to celebrate any significant occasions.
Seventy percent of his store in New Albany is bridal and wedding rings, while the Oxford store stocks about 35 percent bridal jewelry.
Cooper wants people to know that Van Atkins is not too expensive and high-end and that anyone can come in and find something priceless to discover in their store that can cherish a moment forever.
