Oxford’s newest sweet treat, Pistachio Gelato Italiano, opened on the Oxford Square last week in anticipation of serving a unique, authentic and traditional Italian gelato experience.
Owner Mirko Colantonio, an Italian native, says his gelato is the real deal.
“Our gelato is made from scratch everyday. We only use the best ingredients including fresh fruit and no preservatives,” Colantonio said. “People really love it, especially our most popular flavor cookie dough.”
Gelato is closely related to regular ice cream, but the difference is that gelato offers a softer and creamier taste while having a considerably lower percentage of fat and calories.
Since its original creation in 16th century Italy, gelato has a long time tradition of being slow-churned, using more milk than cream to create a denser consistency and more flavorful experience than what would be found in regular ice cream.
Located inside Greenline Salads on Van Buren Avenue, Pistachio Gelato Italiano can be spotted easily by the display case of flavors through the front window or the line of people waiting around the corner.
The new gelato spot offers a wide variety of unique flavors made from scratch: Nutella, salted caramel, vanilla, espresso, lemon, berry cream and cookie dough.
Prices for gelato are $4 for a small cone or cup and $5 for a large.
The eatery embodies the centuries-old tradition of authentic Italian gelato, and the unique flavors and experience can’t be found anywhere else in Oxford.
Oxford resident Ryan Zanardi says that Pistachio Gelato Italiano is almost like a hidden treat.
“I like gelato a lot and for $5 this is a great deal,” Zanardi said. “I got the cookie dough flavor and it is pretty good. I definitely see myself coming back in the future.”
