Hundreds of children from around the LOU community will be waking up early on Aug. 13 and start the day with a fun, 1-mile run.
The University of Mississippi is partnering with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi to host this year’s “Get Ready to Run,” a program that works with students in schools in their physical education classes to teach them about nutrition, fitness and safety techniques when running.
The 1-mile run event is the culmination of the program that begins in the children’s schools during the week prior.
Organizer Amy Goodin said the Get Ready to Run program has impacted more than 18,000 K-5 students in north Mississippi.
“We are expecting around 500 K-5 students on the day of the run,” she said.
What is needed most now, Goodin said are volunteers.
“We are seeking volunteers for race control, grade runners, course marshals, race monitors, gatekeepers and more.”
A volunteer must commit to one brief volunteer training session, about 20 minutes on April 12 and a four-hour commitment to volunteer on the day of the race, from 7:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. Volunteers will get a free T-shirt.
