The thought of Greek food might stir thoughts of moussaka or gyros, but at Ole Miss “Greek” food is an important part of the Greek life experience. One sorority house in particular is known for serving mouth-watering options like a taco bar, a full salad bar and pineapple crush frozen yogurt.
During meal times, the Kappa Delta house is filled with chatter from its members and plenty of guests.
Senior Blake Barham said the organization’s exceptional kitchen staff is the reason the food is so popular.
“Our staff is the best staff in the world, and they’re always bubbly and happy to see you,” Barham said. “It’s a great place to come before and after classes.”
Bettye Heron has worked as a cook for the sorority for four years. She takes meal suggestions from sorority members, and stays up late at night to find new recipes they might enjoy.
Love and presentation are two secrets to the deliciousness, according to Heron.
“I think we cook our food for the girls with love. You gotta cook with love,” she said. “Presentation is everything. If it looks good, they’ll eat it.”
The reputation of KD’s food goes beyond Sorority Row. One house on Rebel Drive has implemented recipes from KD into their own menu.
Former Theta housing manager Madeline Stratemann said because of the close friendship between their house mother and KD’s, recipes like peanut butter noodles with flank steak and turkey spaghetti, have made their way onto Theta’s plates.
“The KD house does have really good food, and I’m sure all the house moms know that,” Stratemann said. “We have adopted some recipes from them over the years because their food tastes so good.”
For most students, joining a Greek organization is about sisterhood, leadership opportunities, and social events. But for the women of Kappa Delta, they take pride in serving some of the best cuisine on campus.
