Police Hope New App Can Help Make Oxford Safer

There’s a new app slowly gaining popularity that Oxford police say has the potential to create a safer community in Oxford.

Ring, a company that manufactures doorbell security cameras, has created the Neighbors app, which allows residents and law enforcement to communicate real-time crime and safety alerts.

Ole Miss Senior Austen Adcock uses the app and appreciates the peace of mind it provides.

“It does make me feel just a tiny bit more secure,” Adcock said. “I think once it really starts kicking up full swing it’s going to be something that really helps the community and makes everyone feel a lot safer, and it might bring the community a little closer together.”

The app is about a year old, and while it may not be well known around Oxford right now, the Oxford Police Department is partnering with the company to create awareness of the app.

Captain Hildon Sessums says the app is like a virtual neighborhood watch.

“It’s people working together with the police department to help solve crime and better protect the community,” said Sessums.

To download the app for free go to the Ring website or follow the link on OPD’s Twitter page. You can also download the Neighbors app from your mobile device app store.
