For those looking to go the beach or travel to an exotic paradise, rest assured there’s already one right here in Oxford’s own back yard. The newly opened Hawaii Poke and Grill is bringing the feel and taste of the islands to the community.

The restaurant’s atmosphere indulges the customer in Hawaiian culture, ranging from themed music to an actual tiki hut bar. The bar offers a variety of delectable island-themed mixed drinks. For rum lovers, check out the “Lava Flow” which includes Myer’s and Bacardi Gold rum blended with banana and coconut liquor, poured over strawberry puree. For those who prefer tequila, check out the “Waikiki Sunrise” with Jose Cuervo tequila, coconut rum, orange juice and cherry juice.

Senior Ole Miss student Sam Gray, a recent customer, said he thoroughly enjoyed his experience at the new restaurant located on 1202 Merchants Dr. where Coyote Blues was formerly located.

“It was quality food at a good price and not many places in Oxford offer as much seafood options as they do here for cheap,” Gray said.

Manager Peter Yu said the poke bowls are healthy, full of protein and provide a large amount of seafood in each order. Photo by Alec Kyzer-Andre.

Most prices for bowls, soups and plates range from $7-$11 during their 11 a.m – 3 p.m. lunch special.

The most popular item on the menu is the Poke Bowl, which can include raw or cooked fish with rice, miso soup or salad, and also includes a wide variety of toppings: sesame seeds, cucumber slices, avocado, scallions, edamame beans, seaweed salad, masago, ginger and wasabi.

Owner Jennifer Yu says the experience is like none other in Oxford.

“You’ll feel like you’re in Hawaii,” Yu said. “We’re something unique, something that has never been to Oxford before.”

Manager Peter Yu says he would recommend choosing any one of their poke bowls to the first time customer.

“It’s healthy, full of protein, and has fresh ingredients and seafood. These choices are all prepared professionally,” he said.

Aside from the unique food combinations and authentic experience, the Yus encourage everyone to come and “hang loose, Hawaiian style.”

Hawaii Poke and Grill is also available on Landshark Delivery.

Food was horrible. If it wasn’t for the waiter being so attentive, The whole experience would have been the worst.
