Tubb Spay & Neuter Project Helping to Reduce Stray Population

The Dr. Leslie Tubb Spay & Neuter Project facilitated its first low-cost surgery on March 7 and the appointments are already booked through May.

Originally known as the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, the nonprofit organization re-purposed and renamed itself last year when it stopped running the city’s animal shelter to focus on offering low-cost spay and neutering to cats and dogs.

The new name pays homage to Dr. Leslie Tubb who left OLHS about $600,000 in his will to help create a low-cost spay and neuter clinic. The group is working with Crossroads Animal Hospital whose veterinarians donate their time to perform the surgeries.

The price to spay or neuter a dog runs from $75 to $105, depending on weight. Female cats are spayed for $70 and male cats cost $50. The average cost for a canine spay or neutering is about $200.

Any animal without written proof of current rabies vaccination will be required to have the shot before the surgery for $10. Other circumstances can cause the price of the surgery to go up, including whether the animal is already pregnant or in heat.

In addition to low-cost spays and neuters, the group offers microchips for the dogs and cats receiving surgery.

“We welcome all dogs and cats no matter where they call home,” Program Director Grace Gillespie.

Currently, Gillespie said the vets are already booked through May for most surgeries.

“If it’s a male cat, we can probably get you in earlier,” she said. “But a 70-pound female dog is going to be a few weeks wait.”

Surgeries are generally done on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
