Chef John Currence’s famous City Grocery Bar has been selected to compete against 32 other bars across the South in this year’s Garden & Gun Magazine’s 2019 Southern Bar Bracket.
The bracket is styled after a typical March Madness competition.
City Grocery Bar competes against Arnaud’s French 75 Bar located in New Orleans, Louisana in the first round.
Voting for the 16 first-round matchups opened Monday and runs until 11:59 p.m. Thursday. Winners of the first round will advance to the second-round matchups, which will start on Friday.
The competition runs through the rest of March and winners will be announced in early April, according to the magazine.
Patrons of each bar can vote once every hour. The magazine encourages social media users to use the hashtag #southernbarbracket to advocate how each person cast his or her vote.
Garden & Gun chose each bar through readers who advocated their favorite hot spots through social media, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. It also asked the magazine’s contributors for their favorite bars and added some of the magazine’s favorites too.
“The result is a group of bars that includes old-school institutions and soon-to-be classics,” the magazine said.
