OHS Announces STAR Students, Teachers

Published

Eight Oxford High School students have been named as STAR students and teachers, achieving an ACT score of at least 35.

Each of the eight students has, in turn, named their STAR teachers. Together, the teacher and student will be honored at the Mississippi Economic Council’s Education Celebration in the spring.

OSD-FB-Logo-300x212.jpgThe Mississippi Economic Council and its M.B. Swayze Foundation sponsor the Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program in an effort to encourage scholastic achievement among the state’s high school students. The STAR Program has two specific purposes — emphasize scholastic excellence and encourage greater scholastic effort among Mississippi students and the recognition of the teaching profession.

STAR student status is awarded to seniors who have the highest ACT score at each school. Any student with a 35 or above receives a nomination. OHS’s eight STAR students scored a 35 or above, three of which have a perfect 36 ACT score.

STAR students, once selected, are asked to nominate their STAR Teacher — the teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholastic achievement.

OHS’s STAR students and teachers, respectively, for the 2018/2019 School Year:
Siena Cizdziel – Christopher Baughman
Jackson Dear – Sommer Husbands
Marawan Elgohry – Nicole Roberson
Eve Gershon – Diala Chaney
Bozidar-Brannan Kovachev – Stella Lindsey
John Allen Ligon – Sugi Wiltcher
Gillian Meyers – Rose Nash
Sydney Rester – Stefanie Beam

MEC will provide certificates to all STAR Students and STAR Teachers. STAR students will also be eligible for scholarships from MEC.
