The new elementary school currently under construction will be named Central Elementary.

The Oxford School District Board of Trustees approved naming the new elementary school after the former Central High School that was once located where the new school is currently under construction.

Superintendent Brian Harvey made the recommendation Monday during the board’s regular meeting to name the new school, Central Elementary School.

“This will pay homage to Central High School, the original school which has occupied the same site for many years,” Harvey said Monday.

OSD-FB-Logo.jpgThe new school is being built just west of Oxford Intermediate School and will be about 89,000-square feet. First- and second-grade students, now attending Oxford Elementary, will be moving to the new school in 2020.

The recently demolished former Central High School building was also once Oxford Junior High and then became an elementary school – that was also called Central Elementary -School for the fifth and sixth grades.

“I think it fits with the community in that area,” Harvey said. “The address will be the same, 409 Washington Avenue.”

Bricks from the buildings that made up the Central school campus will soon be made available to the public.

“The construction crews were able to salvage two pallets of bricks,” Harvey said Monday.

“In time, we’ll make those bricks available to those who would like one.”

According to Heather Lenard, OSD public information officer, the bricks will be free and made available on a first-come-first-served basis.

“We will be sharing more information about the location for pickup at a later date,” Lenard said.
