Counter Rally Protestors Nix Saturday’s Protest
In a message published on Facebook Thursday morning by event organizer Bill Sposato, the Anti-Confederate Counter Rally slated for Saturday has been canceled.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Brandi LaBanc announced last night at the community forum that organizers decided to move Saturday’s counter-protest to the Jackson Avenue Center in lieu of meeting Confederate protestors in the Circle.
Sposato cited university security measures, safety concerns and weather for the cancellation that comes two days before the impending Mississippi Stands rally.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would again like to thank you all for supporting this rally. It is good to know that there are always people who are willing to stand up for what they believe in.
Over the course of the last week, we as organizers have been working with university officials to create a plan for a safe and effective rally. This weekend is incredibly busy for the University with multiple on campus sporting events, high school tours, and other events all spreading the schools security forces thin. Add in both rallies and those resources are stretched even thinner. Because of this, UPD expressed to us that they were not confident in the level of security they could provide for both protesting groups. We, along with the University, tried to find viable alternatives to our plans. The problem we kept facing is that the solution would either be very safe but ineffective as platforms or it would be an effective platform but the University did not feel it could provide security arrangements that would be satisfactory to us and themselves.
For those reasons, combined with the fact there is a high chance of thunderstorms on Saturday, we have decided to cancel this event.
We are sincerely sorry for this. It was an incredibly difficult decision and one we did not make lightly. However, the concern for the safety of all involved must take priority.
If you do choose to protest on your own, that is your first amendment right. Please know that it will be as individuals and not as part of our group.
