The 31 new players arriving in Oxford to play for the red and blue in the fall made for a Rebels Top-25 recruiting class. On Feb. 6, six new recruits signed their letter of intent to play for Ole Miss. Coach Matt Luke and his staff signed the other 25 commits in December.
“We are really excited about this class,” Luke said. “I thought it was very important being able to get back to 85 scholarships. This is a very big class. It’s a deep class.”
On Wednesday, Jerrion Ealy, Jonathan Mingo, John Rhys Plumlee, Dontario Drummond, Sam Williams and Lakia Henry all announced they are headed to Oxford.
ESPN labeled Ealy the third-best running back in the country. He showed why, tallying 1,526 yards and 24 touchdowns on 167 attempts, including 8.9 yards per rush for Jackson Prep and taking home MVP honors at the Under Armour All-American Game.
“Not only is (Ealy) a great player, but he is also a very good person,” Luke said. “He is one of the top players, if not the top player in Mississippi. I am very excited about that decision.”
Ole Miss continues to keep in-state talent in Mississippi as 19 of the 31 commits are staying home.
“I do think that is very important because it will always start there,” Luke said. “It will always start in the state of Mississippi.”
This season the Rebels are not under any probation from the NCAA and have all their scholarships back.
“Top to bottom, I feel like this class can be the foundation of getting this program back on track and back where we all want it to go,” Luke said.
