The crossover on Highway 6 near the Brittany Woods Subdivision will close Friday and remain closed for about eight weeks while the Mississippi Department of Transportation finishes working on highway bridges.
MDOT will be repairing erosion and undermining on the approach structures on the Fourmile Creek bridges.
Riprap will be placed along the creek to prevent future erosion, according to MDOT spokesman Jace Ponder.
“They aren’t working on the bridges themselves, but the concrete slab that is where the asphalt transitions into the concrete bridge,” said City Engineer Reanna Mayoral.
While the crossover is closed, motorists accessing Cannon Road from the west will need to detour to the next crossover approximately a half mile to the east to access the eastbound lanes of Highway 6.
Traffic wanting to access the eastbound lanes of the highway can utilize the crossover at Highway 6/University Avenue/County Road 406.
The inside travel lanes in both directions will also be closed during the roadwork. Travel will have to merge to the outside lanes.
Bridge maintenance on State Route 6 will close the inside travel lanes in both directions.
Advanced warning signs will be in place.
“Extreme caution should be used while driving through this area,” Mayoral said.
