Playing in the state capital for the first time in 11 years Wednesday night, the Ole Miss men’s basketball team made sure it was a victorious return to Mississippi Coliseum with a 69-47 win over Southeastern Louisiana. The Rebels (7-2) won their fourth straight game behind their best defensive performance in four seasons.
Limiting the Lions (4-5) to 47 points, Ole Miss allowed its fewest number of points since the 2014-15 campaign. On the offensive side of the floor, the Rebels shot over 50 percent for the fourth consecutive contest. Behind 7 of 10 shooting from sophomore Devontae Shuler, Ole Miss converted 28 of 53 (52.8 percent) from the field.
Shuler scored a team-high 19 points in the wire-to-wire victory with 14 of them coming in the first half. Terence Davis added 15 points, while Blake Hinson and Dominik Olejniczak contributed nine points apiece. For SLU, Moses Greenwood scored a game-high 20 points by going 9 of 10 from the floor.
With the Rebels up 9-7 early, Olejniczak and Shuler sparked a run to give their team some breathing room. The junior center started with a baby hook that turned into an old-fashioned three-point play as he drew a foul. Shuler grabbed an offensive rebound and floated through the lane for a pair of second chance points. Olejniczak added another hook before Shuler nailed a three from the wing. Ole Miss kept the Lions without a bucket for six minutes, and the 11-0 run made it a 20-7 game.
Behind 14 first half points from Shuler, the Rebels went into the locker room up 33-17. Terence Davis scored nine, and Olejniczak had seven. Ole Miss limited SLU to 30.4 shooting (7 of 23), including 1 of 7 from beyond the arc. Despite playing the majority of the first half with two fouls, Greenwood tallied 11 of the Lions’ 17 points on a perfect 5 of 5 shooting.
Starting the second half, Ole Miss built upon its lead. An 8-2 run gave the Rebels a 22-point cushion, 41-19. SLU did not get any closer than 15 for the rest of the game. When the final buzzer sounded, 22 points proved to be the difference. Terence Davis and Hinson scored nine points apiece to lead the way through the final 20 minutes, as the Rebels shot over 62 percent to wrap up their fourth straight win.
Following back-to-back games away from home, Ole Miss returns to The Pavilion to host Chattanooga (Dec. 16) and close out the week. The Sunday evening matchup is set for 5 p.m. on SEC Network and can be heard on the Ole Miss IMG Sports Network.
