The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is warning drivers to be cautious when pulled over by a non-marked vehicle.
Maj. Alan Wilburn with the LCSD, said Thursday night the sheriff’s department received a report of a blue, Nissan Sentra with flashing blue lights was attempting to pull people over on Highway 7 near Industrial Park Road at about 5 or 6 p.m.
“We believe this person is impersonating a police officer,” Wilburn said Friday morning.
Wilburn said if someone is being pulled over by a suspicious vehicle without Oxford Police, Lafayette County Sheriff or Mississippi Highway Patrol logos on the vehicles, to call 911 and wait for a deputy or officer to arrive.
“Get to a well-lit area,” Wilburn said.
People impersonating law enforcement is not new to north Mississippi. In September, Batesville police reported a man impersonating a police officer pulled over a vehicle on I-55.
In 2012, two people were shot and killed on Mississippi highways in Panola and Senatobia by someone impersonating an officer.
