Oxford and Lafayette County are under a Winter Weather Advisory for Wednesday and into early Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory Tuesday afternoon for several counties in north Mississippi.
The combination of Gulf moisture interacting with colder temperatures could produce light snow across the Midsouth. At times the precipitation may be mixed with sleet or freezing rain.
As of Tuesday afternoon, there is a 50 percent chance of a wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain in Oxford Wednesday morning that should eventually turn into rain. However, the NWS is showing a 40 percent of snow Wednesday evening, with a low of 28 degrees overnight.
Little accumulation of ice or snow is expected.
The NWS warns drivers of possible slippery roads and limited visibility. Bridges, overpasses and county roads will freeze before main roads and highways.
The Oxford and Lafayette County school districts are watching the weather closely. Any decisions made on whether school will be delayed or closed Wednesday or Thursday will be made by 6 a.m. And parents will be notified through the schools’ mass-notification systems and social media sites.
