A discussion on whether or not to add City Hall as a public place that can serve alcohol will be discussed Tuesday during the Oxford Board of Aldermen’s regular meeting.
In Oxford, it is unlawful to serve or possess alcoholic beverages in public places, which include City hall, schools, playgrounds and parks.
However, the city is looking to make City Hall an exemption. Several public buildings are already exempt including the Oxford Conference Center, Powerhouse, Visitor’s Center and the Old Armory Pavilion. Those venues must use a licensed caterer to serve alcohol.
The first reading of the ordinance was done earlier this week during a special meeting. The second reading and public hearing will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.
Mayor Robyn Tannehill said the city will be hosting several Legislators in early December who will be visiting Oxford and meeting with city officials before they start the new session in Jackson.
“Since the Square is the most beautiful holiday backdrop, we would like to have a dinner for the Legislators at City Hall and are seeking the opportunity to serve wine at dinner,” she said.

Alcohol is such an enormous part of the Oxford culture, this is entirely appropriate.
