The Ole Miss baseball team swept their first fall exhibition against Delta State over the weekend. The Rebel’s offense shined on a gloomy Saturday as they combined 20 total runs in 12 innings while holding the Statesmen to just three runs.
The Ole Miss bats slugged a total of 24 hits on the day with 16 in the first six innings alone. Shortstop Grae Kessinger was the main float of the hit parade going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a single.
Sophomores Tyler Keenan and Michael Spears were other bright spots in the Rebel lineup with the duo swinging for five hits, including a single and triple from Spears. Infielders Chase Cockrell and Cole Zabowski also brought in runs with their own doubles.
Rebel arms dominated both games allowing the Statesmen only eight total hits. The lone three runs for Delta State came in the fourth and fifth inning of the first game.
Pitcher Will Ethridge started the day strong with two innings of work facing six batters and striking out three. Junior Zackarie Phillips tallied five strikeouts in his two innings of work, and Tyler Myers closed out the first game with a 1-2-3 inning.
In the second game the Rebels snubbed the Delta State offense to just three hits. Coach Mike Bianco sent two freshmen to the mound in Gunnar Hoglund and Doug Nikhazy as they faced batters for four innings. Nikhazy made his debut sitting all six batters he faced and collecting two strikeouts.
The Ole Miss defense fired on all cylinders making no errors during the two games. The Rebels will have a team scrimmage Friday and Sunday prior to hosting their second exhibition against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Saturday, Oct. 27.
