The Ole Miss Rebels are coming off an electric 37-33 SEC road win over Arkansas this past weekend. Now, head coach Matt Luke and his squad turn their attention to the Auburn Tigers.
“(Arkansas) was a big SEC road win for us,” Luke said Monday at his weekly press conference. “I thought it did a lot for the kids and their confidence.”
The Rebels (5-2) are returning to the Vaught with a few key injuries on both sides of the ball. Senior defensive end Markel Winters sprained his knee and will be out four to six weeks, and wide receiver D.K. Metcalf will miss the rest of season with an injury to the neck.
As for returners, Luke said he hopes to get C.J. Miller and Floyd Allen back on the field for the Auburn game. In light of Metcalf’s injury, receivers Braylon Sanders and Elijah Moore, along with A.J. Brown, will step up to continue keeping the offense strong, Luke said.
“(Sanders) would normally be the replacement for D.K. if he ran a deep route, so he’s the next guy to step in there,” Luke said.
Auburn is rolling into Oxford after a 30-24 loss at home to the Tennessee Volunteers.
“Offensively, they have always been really good at running the football. We’ll have to do a great job at stopping the run and stopping their play-action shots. It’ll be a big challenge, but I’m excited to be back home in front of our home crowd,” Luke said.
Game kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. on ESPN.
