The Oxford Chargers put their perfect district record on the line Friday night as they host the Horn Lake Eagles. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Bobby Holcomb Field.
“We know that we have a big challenge on our hands Friday night,” Oxford head coach Chris Cutcliffe said.
Oxford (6-1, 3-0) defeated DeSoto Central 21-17 last week on the road. The Chargers fell behind early to the Jaguars but started rolling in the second quarter as junior JJ Pegues punched the ball in to take an 8-3 lead after a two-point conversion.
In the fourth quarter DeSoto Central took the lead by a score of 10-8. Oxford regained the lead and held off the Jaguars in a quarter that saw a total of 27 points.
“I was really proud of the way we were able to finish out the win during the fourth quarter Thursday night,” Cutcliffe said. “I think our players did a tremendous job.”
Wide receiver DeDe Pegues has had a special start to his senior season for the blue and gold by padding 276 total receiving yards and three touchdowns. Against DeSoto Central he tallied three receptions for a total of 79 yards and a touchdown.
“DeDe has really stepped up as a senior and has made some really big plays with the game on the line,” Cutcliffe said.
Horn Lake (7-0) rolls into Oxford unbeaten in 2018. Last week the Eagles defeated Columbus 47-6.
Horn Lake is led on the field by senior quarterback Raydarious Jones who has passed for more than 800 yards this season with seven touchdowns and one interception.
“Horn Lake is the No. 1 team in the state for a reason,” Cutcliffe said. “They are extremely talented and well coached.”
Eagles’ running back Patrick Gilliam has rushed the ball for 413 yards on 59 touches for eight touchdowns this season.
