Square Jam Returns to Historic Oxford Square Oct. 19
The Ole Miss men’s and women’s basketball teams will partner with the City of Oxford to host the fifth Square Jam on the Oxford Square. After a two-year hiatus, the popular tipoff event returns Friday, Oct. 19.
The Rebels will showcase their skills on a basketball court with lights set up on the east side of the Square in the parking lot in front of City Hall. Fans will get to see the teams participate in player introductions, a three-point shooting contest, a dunk contest and other surprises. New this year, members of the Rebel Kids Club can sign up for a chance to showcase their dunking skills in the Kids Dunk Contest, hosted by ESPN basketball personality Seth Greenberg. In addition, both teams will be signing autographs after the event.
“Square Jam is one of the coolest concepts to tip off a season in college basketball,” said head men’s coach Kermit Davis. “Hoops outside on the iconic Oxford Square is a fantastic combination.”
New to the festivities will be One Shining Moment, a special feature as part of 2018 being the Year Of The Fan. From 5-6 p.m., before the teams are introduced, fans will be able to take the court to try and replicate some of the most memorable shots in Ole Miss Basketball history.
“I’m excited to be a part of an event that involves the community,” said head women’s coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. “The people of Oxford have not only embraced me, but my family and now they will have an opportunity to do the same with these young women.”
The men’s and women’s team will begin the 2018-19 season with an exhibition doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 2 inside The Pavilion at Ole Miss. The women will face LeMoyne-Owen at 3 p.m. before the men take the court against Fayetteville State. Admission is free for both contests.
