In order to put the final surface down on the roundabout at South Lamar and Belk boulevards, the intersection will be closed this coming weekend.
Earlier this month, the contractor Chancellor Brothers LLC, informed the city that due to the excessive amount of traffic and tight working conditions during the week, it would be best to close the intersection, Sept. 29 and 30, to allow the placement and the curing of the final surface before traffic can drive on the roundabout.
“Closing this intersection will also provide a much safer working environment for both the contractor and the public,” said David Chancellor, manager, in an email to the Oxford Board of Aldermen.
The closing of the intersection was in lieu of closing one lane at a time, which would create a more dangerous environment for workers.
Traffic is expected to be lighter this coming weekend since the Ole Miss Rebels will be playing out of town at LSU Saturday.
Last week, the aldermen reluctantly approved the two-day closure.
