UPD Arrests Students in Hit-and-Run That Left Another Student Injured; Local Police Report Busy Weekend
The University of Mississippi Police Department filed a felony charge against a student for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian who is also a university student.
On Monday, Sept. 17, the driver of the vehicle, John Walsten, turned himself into UPD officials. Walsten, 18, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. During an initial appearance before a judge at Lafayette County Justice Court, Walsten’s bond was set at $15,000. Walsten, of Metairie, Lousiana, is enrolled as a freshman at the University of Mississippi.
At approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, a pedestrian crossing the road near the intersection of Northgate Drive and Sorority Row was struck by a red 2011 Chevy Silverado. The pedestrian, a University of Mississippi student, was found a short time later at the scene with severe injuries and was transported to the hospital. The pedestrian is currently still under treatment for injuries sustained during the accident.
UPD investigators are continuing their investigation into the incident and ask anyone who may have information about this incident to please call 662-915-7234.
Busy weekend
The incident is just one hundreds that local law enforcement responded to over the weekend in the LOU community. The busy weekend is attributed to the Ole Miss Rebels game against Alabama Saturday at the Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium.
“It was as busy of a weekend as I can remember,” said Maj. Jeff McCutchen with the Oxford Police Department this morning. “We answered 569 calls for service from midnight on Thursday until shift change this morning (Monday).”
One of those calls was a report of shots fired on Hathorn Road late Saturday evening. McCutchen said no one was injured and the incident is still under investigation.
OPD officers made more than 80 arrests over the weekend, the majority being alcohol-related, from DUIs to public drunkenness. UPD responded to more than 50 calls and made eight arrests. The sheriff’s department responded to about 47 calls and made six arrests over the weekend.
