The Oxford Chargers travel to Pontotoc this Friday night to take on the Warriors. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Oxford (2-1) is coming off of a highly contested victory in the Crosstown Classic against Lafayette, 29-27. The Chargers pulled out of the game on a last second field goal off the boot of Jake Tannehill.
“It was probably as exciting as a Crosstown Classic has ever been,” Oxford Head Coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “There have been overtime games that have come down to the wire, but that is the first one I know of that has been decided in regulation. Great job by our snapper, holder, kicker and field goal protection to get it through the uprights.”
This season, the Chargers look to a seasoned group of players on the offensive line.
“We have four seniors and two sophomores that have played regularly with a couple rotating in and out,” Cutcliffe said. “They have done a fantastic job.”
Heading into the game against Pontotoc, Cutcliffe said Oxford looks to improve in all three phases of the game prior to starting district play next week.
Pontotoc (4-0) enters the game after defeating Aberdeen 48-8 on the road.
“I think Pontotoc is a really good football team,” Cutcliffe said. “They are as well-coached as anybody in the state of Mississippi. Coach Carter and the rest of their staff does a fantastic job.”
This season the Warriors senior quarterback Justin Carter passed for 763 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. His teammate, RB Gabe Harmon, averages over 106 yards per game.
