Beth Hunt’s grandmother encouraged her to take up tennis or golf during her childhood because it’s “something you can do all your life.” Hunt politely declined and chose art instead.

“I’ve had the pleasure of teaching students as young as nine and as old as 93, and when I see how much they enjoy doing calligraphy I feel so grateful that I could share it with them,” Hunt said. Photo via Facebook.

The owner of Beth Hunt Calligraphy & Design once asked Santa for a calligraphy set for Christmas. After unwrapping the gift on Christmas morning, she said she remembers sitting at her desk practicing writing the letters in the booklet that came with the pen set. From then on, her passion was ignited.

“I’ve had the pleasure of teaching students as young as nine and as old as 93, and when I see how much they enjoy doing calligraphy I feel so grateful that I could share it with them,” Hunt said.

With an Ole Miss business degree in hand, she ventured to a little town outside Paris to teach English for a year. After her teaching stint, she moved to Washington, D.C. to enter the corporate world. While in D.C. she met her husband, Will, an Oxford native, and moved to north Mississippi. Almost ten years ago she started her calligraphy business that grew into an Oxford art staple.

She said her love for the art form only heightened when she began teaching.

“My favorite part about teaching is getting to share with people how to do something I enjoy so very much,” she said. “I love when people leave my classes feeling accomplished because in a short hour and a half time frame they’ve learned something they didn’t know how to do when they came in. I’ve had the honor of teaching nearly 500 students over the past five years.”

Her fall workshops begin Tuesday, Sept. 11, with four being hosted in Oxford. She said she likes to keep her class sizes small to allow for personalized, one-on-one instruction. All materials will be provided, so all you need to bring is yourself, she said.

For those interested in viewing her artwork, she has calligraphy art prints, custom calligraphy return address stamps and hand-drawn silhouettes available for sale at bethhuntcalligraphy.com.

Hunt hosts group workshops she calls “Calligra-Parties.” Photo via Facebook.

In addition to the group workshops, Hunt also hosts private workshops she calls “Calligra-Parties.”

“They’re great for groups of friends, sororities, bridal parties, or anyone who wants to get a group together for a girls night out to learn calligraphy,” she said.

Information about all of her classes can be found at bethhuntcalligraphy.com or by emailing beth@bethhuntcalligraphy.com.
