The Oxford community continues to rally around Bridgette Turner and her family as she battles for her life after a rare condition caused her to undergo skin grafts and multiple amputations recently.
In June, Bridgette started breaking out in hives and having extreme burning sensations on most of her limbs. After being treated originally for an allergic reaction, her symptoms only grew worse.
After several surgeries and skin grafts, she had both feet and her left hand amputated, along with a portion of her right hand.
So far, she’s only tested positive for is a blood-clotting disorder called Factor 5 Leiden, a disorder where the liver messes up its production of blood-clotting factors like protein C and S. However, there have been no official diagnoses yet, according to Preston.
Last week, Bridgette took a turn for the worse. Her white blood cells climbed and she had trouble breathing. Spots of pneumonia were seen on her x-rays and sepsis started to set in. She was soon in a coma fighting for her life. The next 24 hours would be crucial.
Bridgette started to improve. The antibiotics were working and her white cell count was falling.
This morning, Preston said his wife opened her eyes and could hear those around her.
“The doctor said everything’s still good and going in the right direction,” he said this morning. “But she has a long way to go before she’s out of the woods.”
Turner is a Domino’s Pizza franchisee in north Mississippi who owns stores in West Point and Amory and supervises the Oxford Domino’s. She and Preston live in Oxford with their 14-year-old son, John Preston.
A GoFundMe account set up for the Turners has raised more than $32,000.
