The SWM/Blauer Company, a Boston-based company that specializes in clothing and protective wear for police officers, firefighters and public safety officials, will be moving its operations out of Lafayette County within the coming year.
Jon Maynard, president and CEO of the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, said Blauer announced recently that the company – that has been located in the Max D. Hipp Lafayette County Industrial Center for 20 years – will be moving into the building once occupied by Batesville Caskets.
The move is expected to take about a year, Maynard said.
“It’s a business decision,” he said Friday morning. “Their business has grown and they a need larger space with immediate access to Interstate 55.”
Maynard said the building in Batesville is twice the size of the Oxford location and is configured in a square, rather than a rectangle, which offers Blauer more flexibility in their distribution process.
“We worked very hard to keep them here,” Maynard said. “The (Lafayette County) Supervisors did a fantastic job trying to make it work.”
The good news, Maynard said, is no jobs will be lost.
“All local citizens working at Bauer have been invited to move with the company so they will be able to keep their jobs,” he said. “Half of their employees already live in Batesville.”
SWM/Blauer employees about 150 people.
Maynard said recruitment for a new company to move into the building being vacated by Blauer is a top priority.
“We’re already marketing the existing building,” he said. “It should be in high demand.”
Once a new company moves into the SWM building, Maynard said it will be a net gain of job opportunity for Lafayette County residents.
Blauer, along with the Mississippi Development Authority, the Tennesse Valley Authority and the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association will all be assisting the Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation in marketing the building to a new employer.
