Oxford Chargers, Lafayette Commodores Join Forces with United Way for Crosstown Classic
As part of the annual football rivalry between the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Commodores, the United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County (UWOLC) teams up with Lafayette County School District and Oxford School District for the Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge.
With a 7 p.m. kickoff time on Friday, Sept. 7, the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Commodores compete on the gridiron for Crosstown Classic bragging rights at Bobby Holcomb Field in Oxford.
The rivalry is not limited to the field, though, as supporters of both schools can compete between now and Wednesday, Sept.12, to see which school can raise the most money for the Lafayette-Oxford-University (LOU) community.
Each district has a unique text-to-donate code that will enable supporters’ donations to be counted towards their favorite hometown team.
To support the Lafayette Commodores, supporters can text “DORES” to 40403, and then click on the link they will receive prompting them to complete their donation. Commodore fans can also simply give online at www.unitedwayoxfordms.org/dores.
To support the Oxford Chargers, supporters can text “CHARGERS” to 40403, and then click on the link they will receive prompting them to complete their donation. In addition, Charger fans can donate online at www.unitedwayoxfordms.org/chargers.
The pledged donation must be collected by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, in order for the amount to count towards this year’s competition and the supporter’s team of choice. Every dollar makes a difference and the UWOLC is proud to partner with its local school districts to make a significant impact throughout Oxford and Lafayette County.
“The Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge provides a perfect opportunity to partner with our friends at Oxford School District and Lafayette County School District to make a meaningful impact throughout the LOU community,” said UWOLC’s Executive Director Kurt Brummett. “Whether someone donates in support of the Chargers or Commodores, the contribution will make a significant difference in the lives of others.”
Cash and check donations will also be accepted at the United Way tent at the game as well as at the United Way office in Oxford prior to the contest deadline. A special trophy presentation will be held at the winning school district following the close of the competition.
The series is currently tied after the Lafayette Commodores won last year’s Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge. The rivalry will be fierce again this year as both districts seek to bring home the trophy while helping to improve lives and meet needs of local residents.
