The world began to see patriotism through a different lens after the attacks on the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and Twin Towers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. To commemorate the event, the Ole Miss ROTC is hosting their annual run in honor of the victims and their families Sept. 8 beginning at 6:45 a.m. at the Lyceum.
The first 9/11 Memorial Run was a joint service event where the Navy, Air Force and Marine ROTC units all participated, according to Christian Sanchez, second lieutenant in the Ole Miss ROTC.
“Shortly after the first two years of the 9/11 Memorial Run started, the ROTC units of Ole Miss were joined by local firefighters, police and other interested supporters from the community,” he said. “The 9/11 Memorial Run continues to grow each year with more student organizations.”
Last year members of the Ole Miss Rebelettes, fraternities and sororities, and members of the Oxford Crossfit Gym participated in the event. All are welcome to sign up to join the run, Sanchez said.
“We would love to see this 9/11 Memorial Run grow even more and welcome the biggest participation we have ever had,” he said. “All campus and local community organizations are welcome to join us.”
The route begins in front of the Lyceum, snakes around the Square and ends in the Grove.
