The Ole Miss football team finished day 11 of fall camp Monday coming off of a full scrimmage on Saturday.
“I thought the offense, for the first half of the scrimmage, executed very well. That was good to see,” Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke said. “I thought, defensively, we had some opportunities to get off the field on third down, so that was a point of emphasis today. If you have a chance to get off the field, let’s do it. But I do think the offense was clicking early.”
Coach Luke’s squad is focusing on build mental and physical strength in the second week of camp.
“We are trying to become more physical and tougher,” Luke said. “It’s all about knowing when to go work and pull off and get healthy.”
This season Ole Miss has to replace the running game of Jordan Wilkins, now of the Indianapolis Colts. Junior running back Scottie Phillips is hitting it hard in fall camp with the first and second string offense.
“I think I am doing pretty good getting a lot of reps with the ones and two’s,” Phillips said. “I’m making the best out of every opportunity and getting better every day.”
Prior to “Meet the Rebels” on Saturday, Ole Miss had a team scrimmage in the Vaught and Phillips was able to break a play open.
“Scottie hit a big one on Saturday in the scrimmage,” Luke said. “There’s a really good competition growing there at running back. They’re making each other better. I really like the competition and the physicality they’re running with.”
Phillips said he credits his teammates with some of his success on the field.
“The O-line did a great job of paving the way for me,” he said. “I had the easy job of finding the hole and bursting through it.”
Ole Miss football ends fall camp at the start of the semester, Aug. 20.
