An Oxford High School student recently attended a seven day long camp to learn the ropes of being a physician.
Mary Marshall Waller, a rising 11th grader, spent her last week of summer learning at the Georgetown University Medical Institute.
Waller learned a variety of medical tasks. She performed different types of stitches, worked with patient simulators to deliver a baby, and intubated a patient and took blood.
Mary Marshall said she’s interested in pursuing orthopedic surgery or pediatric trauma in college, preferably in the South.
“I’ve had the incredible opportunity of shadowing orthopedic doctor Daniel Boyd (of Oxford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine), which has really developed my interest in orthopedics,” she said.
Her favorite experience at Georgetown University was learning different types of sutures, she said.
Waller said she credits her success in life to her parents.
“They are always pushing me to be my best and pick me up when I fall short,” she said.
Lona Waller, Mary Marshall’s mother and OSD’s 2018 Parent of the Year, said she was grateful for the opportunity Mary Marshall was given.
