Ole Miss softball coach Mike Smith announced on Friday, the hiring of Caty Reeves as the Rebels’ volunteer assistant coach.

The hiring is a reunion of sorts, with Smith and Reeves’ relationship dating back a decade to Reeves playing days under Smith at California Baptist from 2008-11. The Corvallis, Oregon native then joined Smith’s coaching staff as an assistant coach at McNeese State before accepting the head coaching position at NAIA member Oklahoma Wesleyan, where she led the Eagles for the past six seasons.
Having known Reeves for more than a decade, Smith has the luxury of comfortability with his new volunteer assistant.
“I know that Caty will make a great impact on our team, and we’re excited to add her to our staff,” said Smith. “What excites me is that she brings six years off head coaching experience, which you can’t say about too many volunteer coaches out there. Adding her resume to our program will be a huge asset to our already experienced staff. I have also had the unique opportunity to work with Caty in the past, both as a player and on my coaching staff. Her experience leaves no doubt that Caty will bring innovative ideas and tremendous attention to detail to our coaching staff.”
During her six seasons at OKWU, Reeves collected a 185-141 overall record, leading the Eagles to just their second-ever appearance in the NCCAA National Championship in 2015. Reeves’ players earned 31 all-conference nods over her six campaigns, including a pair of conference pitcher and player of the year awards as well as a freshman of the year laurel.
Prior to making the move to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Reeves coached on Smith’s staff at McNeese State for one season in 2012, primarily working with the Cowgirl hitters and catching staff.
As a player, Reeves played behind the plate and as a designated player on Smith’s Cal Baptist Lancer squads. During her four seasons, the Lancers went 251-22, claiming four-consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference Titles and trips to the NAIA World Series. In 2009, Smith and Reeves captured the National Championship, the first in CBU-history.
An NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2010 and 2011, Reeves also was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American Second Team. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2010 and completed her master’s degree in education in 2012.
