As Oxford grows, so does the amount of trash its citizens produce that needs to be picked up and hauled to the Oxford Transfer Station off Pea Ridge Road.

However, the transfer station was running out of space with the increase of solid waste coming into the facility.
Now, thanks to Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority, the Oxford Transfer Station has a new 40-foot by 100-foot expansion that can accommodate tons of additional trash.
“Three Rivers paid $358,000 for the expansion,” said Amberlyn Liles, superintendent of Oxford Environmental Services.
The transfer station was shut down for three months during construction of the new addition and is opening today to the public.

On Friday, local government officials, Environmental Services crews and staff and Three Rivers administrators gathered at the new transfer station, located at 55 County Road 3067, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“We’re thrilled to have this extra space,” Liles said. “We’re are going to be able to better serve our customers and be more productive.”
This is the first expansion since the transfer station opened in 1990. The station is used by the city of Oxford, Lafayette County and the University of Mississippi for the disposal of garbage.
On an average day, there are about 15-20 18-wheeler trailer trucks hauled to Three Rivers in Pontotoc, which equates to about 800 tons of garbage a day. In conjunction with the transfer station is also the rubbish site and the recycling center.
After garbage is bagged, put into the can and dragged down to the corner, most people don’t give their departing trash a second thought.
However, that’s just the beginning of the journey for our waste.

After being collected and hauled, loaders then push the trash into a pit where a truck is waiting below. The truck is covered before it heads to the Three Rivers Solid Waste Landfill in Pontotoc.
“This expansion will allow the process to move along more efficiently and faster,” said Doug Wiggins, manager of Three Rivers Solid Waste.
The transfer station is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday-Friday for residents who need to drop waste off between their regular pick-up days.
