The Oxford High School Chargers kick off the 2018 season versus Warren Central on August 17 in the Red Carpet Bowl at Vicksburg High School.
Last season did not end the way the Chargers planned when they didn’t make it to the playoffs. To get back where they want to be, the team has had to raise their level of play.
“Our players have done a great job of buy-in into that,” said Oxford High School head coach Chris Cutcliffe. “We’ve had some good leaders develop.”
Warren Central defeated an undefeated Tupelo in the first round of the playoffs last season.
“Warren Central is a really good and talented team…extremely well coached,” Cutcliffe said. “The team has had a lot of success playing in a lot of big games, so we know it’s a big challenge to open the season.”
Senior wide receiver DeDe Pegues said the Chargers are trying to bond and prepare to bring a state championship to Oxford.
“Last season wasn’t the best season we could’ve had, but it was a great season for our first year in 6A,” Pegues said. “I expect more out of this season.”
After stepping into the 6A region, the Chargers know what to expect this season.
“In 6A any team can win on Friday night,” Cutcliffe said. “What we can take away from last season is every practice matters, everything you do along the way matters. A team can’t slip up one game cause it might cost you a seed in the playoffs.”
The Chargers take on the Starkville Yellow Jackets Aug. 24 for the annual Little Egg Bowl trophy.
