Growing up in a family of educators, Teasha Sanders not only understands the importance of education but the necessity of community members volunteering time and talents to make their schools the best they can for area children.

For her own efforts, Sanders was recognized Monday by the Oxford School Board of Trustees as the 2018 OSD Citizen of the Year.
SuzAnne Liddell, director of federal programs, said Sanders was selected as Citizen of the Year by a committee made up of teachers and administrators within the school district.
“She’s done so much for Oxford School District,” Liddell said.
Sanders has served on the Title I planning team, AdvancED team as a community member, coordinated Literacy Parent Nights for students at the Housing Authority Conference, promoted school attendance with Breakfast at the Bus Stop and has supported student registration with disseminating information to families.
Sanders was described by members of the committee as someone “dedicated to her work and how it impacts students,” a “lady with qualities of honesty and integrity” and a true “ambassador” for the OSD.
Sanders has worked for with the Oxford Housing Authority as its head of occupancy for more than a decade and was recently promoted to deputy director. She led the effort last year to find homes for 86 families living at the Riverside Place public housing complex when the contract between Oxford and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development was not renewed in 2016.
Sanders, who had a daughter in the school district, said winning the title of Citizen of the Year was special to her and thanked the board.
“I also want to thank the school district for all it does in conjunction with the housing authority,” she said. “There are so many programs you guys have initiated, and I want to thank you for that.”
