The Oxford School District Board of Trustees voted Monday to retain Dr. Edward Fields of University Sports Medicine as the team physician.

In May, the board advertised for requests for proposals for team physician. Fields has been the team physician for OSD for about 18 years. However, with more than one orthopedic group in Oxford, the board decided to ask for the RFPs to give other groups an opportunity to apply for the position.
Earlier this month, the board heard presentations from University Sports Medicine and Oxford Orthopedics.
“We are lucky to have two quality firms that want to care for our athletes,” said OSD Superintendent Brian Harvey.
Harvey recommended to the Board to approve continuing its relationship with Fields as team physician.
“That doesn’t mean Oxford Orthopedics did anything wrong,” he said. “But as superintendent, I’ve had no complaints about University Sports for almost 20 years. Dr. Fields is passionate about being with the district and passionate about being a Charger.
Board member Scott Shipman said he was sorry the district couldn’t work with both groups, as they were both quality orthopedics.
Harvey reminded the board that the school district does not dictate what doctor a parent decides to bring their child to in case of injury.
“They choose which doctor to go to,” he said.
