Ole Miss women’s golfer sophomore Macy Holliday won the Texas Women’s Stroke Play Championship on Saturday. Holliday had to birdie twice in a two-hole playoff to claim victory.
Holliday shot 3-under to defeat Texas senior Maddie Luitwieler and Sam Houston State junior Hanna Alberto to win the title at Magnolia Creek Golf Club in League City.
Holliday opened the tournament strong, going 3-under through the first 18 holes. She stumbled with her only bogey of the day on No. 2 and finished the day 4-under from then on. Holliday shot a birdie on No. 9, followed with three more on the back nine to take the lead into the clubhouse after the first day, according to Ole Miss Sports.
Another strong back-nine kept Holliday in contention through Round 2. This time, she birdied No. 8 before adding three birdies in the final nine holes for a 1-under 71 to land in second place, one stroke behind Alberto, going into the final round. In Round 3, Holliday used two birdies to make the turn at even par.
“On hole 14, my dad said, ‘You’re not out of this yet,’ and I rolled my eyes and thought that I was,” Holliday said. “But my mindset changed, and I told myself I had worked too hard to at least not be in a playoff.”
“There was a huge gallery there watching and everyone was really congratulatory and happy for me—I even got a Hotty Toddy.” Holliday said. “It was the coolest moment.”
Holliday topped a talented field that included the Southland Conference Golfer of the Year in Alberto, who was also the reigning Texas Stroke Play Champion, and Baylor sophomore Gurleen Kaur, a 2018 Golfweek All-American.
Holliday’s summer will continue with several more marquee events. She’ll take part in a U.S. Women’s Amateur Qualifier in Houston on July 2. Next, she will compete in the Texas State Amateur Championship July 17-20 in San Antonio. The U.S. Women’s Amateur is set for August 6-12 in Kingston Springs, Tennessee.
