The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council’s annual summer art camp will perform a series of shows tonight at The Powerhouse beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Director Daniel Boyle said it is his first year teaching the theatre camp, but variations of it have been offered in the past.
“I have taught theater at the high school level in the past and served as a sponsor to student drama clubs,” he said, “But this is my first time working with younger ages, and it has been a blast to see their enthusiasm, creativity and talent.”
Last week, YAC held a camp for younger children. Boyle said this week’s camp has been organized for older children, as they focus more on theatre arts.
“We’ve covered a lot of concepts and been very creative, but the most important lesson of the week is one in confidence and collaboration,” he said.
The children wrote a collaborative script and worked together to perform the show. Individually, each child had to learn the respective lines, steps and directions, which were written by each performer.
“We’ve sang, tapped, written poems, danced and laughed … a lot. Maybe a couple of tears as well,” Doyle said.
