Golden Eagles Hand Diamond Rebels First Loss in Regionals
The Rebels will face the Golden Eagles again tonight in a winner-takes-all final at 6 p.m. after losing their first game in regional play.
Ole Miss’ (48-16) offense had trouble early on against junior RHP Ethan Roberts. The Rebels got on the scoreboard in the eighth on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Cooper Johnson that ended Roberts’ day on the hill. Roberts worked 7.2 innings giving up two runs on six hits.
Ole Miss applied more pressure with a two-out rally in the eighth as Thomas Dillard got to second off an error by the right fielder that scored Ryan Olenek. Cole Zabowski brought in Johnson and Dillard to cut the deficit in half.
Game One Overview
A pitchers duel broke out through the first two innings of the game. The Rebel’s starter James McArthur had stellar defensive plays behind him through the first two innings. He faced very few sluggers, as a set of double plays got him out of jams.
Tennessee Tech plated the first runs of the afternoon in the third inning. Golden Eagle Alex Junior started the offensive tear on a single that scored Nick Osborne. Brennon Kaleiwahea followed with a base hit that scored Harris. They added another run on a double by Chase Chambers that chased McArthur.
Rebel James McArthur worked 2.2 innings allowing four runs on four hits. He struck out two batters and walked three Golden Eagles.
Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco brought Will Stokes in the game from the bullpen. Stokes allowed Trevor Putziq to single to left and push the Golden Eagles lead out to 4-0.
Ole Miss got the first hit off TTU’s pitcher in the bottom of the third with a two-out single off the bat of Jacob Adams.
The Golden Eagles added more runs in the fifth off of a three-run dinger by Chambers, then three runs in the sixth inning. In the ninth, Tech tacked five more runs onto the board to win 15-5.
