BancorpSouth Hosts Financial Protection Seminar for Seniors
Fraud committed against senior citizens is a hot topic on a national level, but it can be an issue in small towns like Oxford, too. To try and combat the frequency of this fraud, BancorpSouth of Oxford is hosting a financial protection seminar for senior adults at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at the Oxford Conference Center.
Recent research showed 1 in 20 older adults indicated some form of perceived financial mistreatment in the past decade, according to the National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA).
The seminar is focusing on the senior community and retirees because these two local communities seem to be targeted most often, Randy Leister, BancorpSouth market president of Oxford said.
“Most people in the industry would tell you that seniors seem to be targeted because they have worked all their lives for their retirement and money,” Leister said.
The seminar will be lead by Ivory Craig, associate state director of community outreach of the AARP Mississippi, along with Alfred Cutturini, elder law director of the North Mississippi Rural Legal Services.
Topics of discussion will include protection of bank accounts from fraud and identity theft, protection of assets and estate planning issues, like the importance of having a will.
This will be BancorpSouth’s third year hosting a financial protection seminar geared towards senior adults, according to Leister.
