Gas prices surged over the Memorial Day weekend to the highest since 2014, according to a AAA report.
Lafayette County hit the No. 2 spot on the charts for Mississippi’s most expensive gas, with prices averaging $2.705. While it’s above the state’s average—$2.657—it’s well below the national average—$2.968.
Mississippi saw a 52 cent average jump in a year’s time, from May 2017 to May 2018, AAA reported.
Neighboring Yalobusha County’s gas prices topped the rankings with a $2.750 average, whereas Panola County had the most inexpensive—$2.614.
The current price per barrel of oil sits at a fluctuating $66.85, which dropped since the Memorial Day holiday, according to West Texas Intermediate (WTI).
Even with rising gas prices Kroger cashier Stephanie Hill said business has been consistent.
“It hasn’t slowed down for [Kroger] at all,” Hill said.
Oxford resident Bo Farris said he purchases his gas at Kroger for convenience and because of the 3 cent customer loyalty discount.
